Goals for Course:   Design Thinking for Community Building:

Better thinking, e.g. Critical-thinking (what is really the problem… why is there a problem? Why do you do that?, etc…  ), Creative-thinking, (i.e. learning how to think outside of the box, or outside of a particular ‘ideology’), but also other types of thinking like referential, associational/relational, evaluative but also reflective and evaluative thinking, etc… ;  International, human-centered cooperation; Deep Listening;  Development of deeper levels of insight into human motivations, feelings and needs; Empathy and greater flexibility;  Better acceptance of positive criticism for personal, professional growth;Conflict-resolution orientation…, etc…

Sufficient proficiency in English as an academic language; Willingness and openness to communicate and work with others form a different cultural and linguistic background;  Willingness to think outside of the box, to present and discuss ideas with fellow students in English.

Design thinking is a creative, yet, practical and structured process that designers use to develop ideas, methods, products, events, etc... in order to resolve problems in the future.  It is a problem-solution based method of thinking and can be used in contexts other than design.  In this course, we use the general structure of the ‘design thinking method’ to bring students from diverse backgrounds together to solve a problem that we can find at the UCLL.  The problem might not be ‘wicked’, but it is complicated and needs a different approach or different perspective. The students are not learning about ‘design thinking’ or how to give a ‘design thinking course’, but, by going through the process based on the design thinking method, the diverse teams learn how to solve problems through collaboration. Through the experience, they will (hopefully) learn more about themselves, about community building but also help the UCLL find solutions for some of its ‘issues’. There are many different approaches to Design Thinking, but generally the structure is similar and accepted.  There’s a problem, which needs resolution:

To understand what’s really going on behind the problem, research needs to be done;  Based on simple primary and secondary research, ideas and concepts are generated that could solve the problem; From the generated ideas and concepts, a prototype is developed; Feedback (criticism) is requested in order to improve the prototype;

The prototype is adapted based on feedback (criticism);  A solution for the problem is proposed.

Students follow a process of the 6 phases of the Design Thinking process.

•There are many different approaches to Design Thinking, but generally the structure is similar.  There’s a problem, which needs resolution - DEFINE.

•To understand what’s really going on behind the problem, research needs to be done (empathy)- DISCOVER;

•Based on research, ideas and concepts  are generated that could solve the problem (creativity)- DREAM; •From the generated ideas and concepts, a prototype (product, programme, service, etc..)  is developed (collaborative team working) - DESIGN;

•Feedback is requested in order to improve the prototype (ability to accept criticism) ;

•The prototype is adapted based on feedback (flexibility and empathy);

•A solution for the problem is proposed (goal oriented/able to get things done) - DELIVER.

PowerPoint presentations.  Own research on the project selected by lecturer and students

Sufficient proficiency in Academic English.  Students will be discussing, research and presenting in English. They will need to turn in a journal of their work in English.

Lectures are given to provide insight into the Design Thinking process and assignments given.  Over the course of the semester, students progressively develop their project and get feedback via Team Presentations.
